problem with yum installation

Finily I was able to set up yum but unfortunately
it does not work ....

# yum search httpd
There was a problem importing one of the Python modules

I think part of the problem is that you have been mixing and matching. You said you were running RHel 4 but your GCC version is from FC3. Doing this will get you in a world of problems in short order. RHel4=Centos4, RHel4 is not equal to FC3.

Unless you know exactly what you have mixed (unlikely), I would take it as a sign to do a fresh install. Centos 5.1 is out (RedHat el 5.1 with logos removed). Otherwise problems will just pop up without any real explanation.

I rpm the following files.

centos-yumconf-4-4.5.noarch.rpm python-urlgrabber-2.9.8-2.noarch.rpm
python-elementtree-1.2.6-5.el4.centos.i386.rpm
sqlite-3.3.6-2.i386.rpm
python-sqlite-1.1.7-1.2.1.i386.rpm yum-2.4.3-3.el4.centos.noarch.rpm


If you are aware of different versions of these files
compatible with RHEL 4 please let me know and I will
try to reinstall everything one more time.

The above would indicate that at some point your python package was replaced with an FC3 one. If that is mixed, you most probably have other stuff mixed in as well.

OK. Assume this is true. What can be done about this ?
I bought Dell PC recently and Linux was preinstalled
by the manufacture i.e. by Dell. I am very new to Linux.
Previously I used Windows and now Linux seems dramatically
difficult to me at this point. After struggling for several
days I failed to do even simple stuff in Linux which I
was able to do instantly in Windows. Basically, I am asking
if anybody could explain me a practical solution for the problem.
What exactly I have to do to fix the problem ? Reinstall GCC
which is from RHEL 4 ? If so, what is the best way to do this ?
Or there is some other solution?

1st. You had years to get used to doing things the windows way. It will take some time to learn the Linux way. You cannot think in windows and use Linux either. You have to learn to think Linux, it will take some time.

2nd. At some point YOU mixed repos and mistakenly installed some FC3 stuff. When most of us first started we did something similar, just learn from your mistakes and move on.

3rd. Refer to post #19. It is the best, safest, and fastest, answer I have for you.

My Fedora 8 was downloaded to a cd by a computer professional, but he was not able to show me, due to his time being limited, on where to find the basic yum file and then install it. Since then, I have gotten an update message, which I cannot use as the system cannot find the yum file. Where do I look, on the CD, so that I can install the basic yum file and then the upgrade? I am rather a newbie to Linux and definitely to Fedora.

yum is part of any Fedora base install. If it is not there then something was done very wrong. When you go to the command line as root and type "yum check-update" (without quotes), how does it respond?
