Since you seem lost. Use the below link I think is best because it is just copy and paste.

http://www.noobslab.com/2012/10/inst...in-ubuntu.html

Hope that helps.

Edit: In case it breaks (who knows with Ubuntu, Unity, and Nvidia?)

Code:
sudo apt-get autoremove nvidia-current
sudo apt-get purge xserver-xorg
sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg xserver-xorg-video-all
sudo reboot
What is the window/Superkey? I have never heard that, and there is no key labeled that on my keyboard.

It is also known as Mod4. It's on the bottom row usually to the left of the spacebar between the ctrl and alt keys.

Anyway, in this case it is not important, it was just a way of launching the nvidia settings program: you should be able to launch it from your desktop menu too.

Evo2.

How did you install the driver originally? It's possible that an update may have broken it, but I don't see anything outstanding on Launchpad. If you installed the driver through the repository, it's DKMS enabled, so any updates to the kernel will automatically rebuild the nvidia kernel module. If you installed the driver directly from the website, that won't happen, which means you have to rebuild it.

Hi rokytnji. Well it didn't work even though it seemed to load fine. I did get a note about no "xserver".
So I edited it as you suggested:

Code:

sudo apt-get autoremove nvidia-current
sudo apt-get purge xserver-xorg
sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg xserver-xorg-video-all
sudo reboot

This brought me back to where I was in the beginning. It was the only way I was able to get video.
I was wondering if the sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg xserver-xorg-video-all comand should be placed in the first group of commands because of this and receiving the note that there was no xserver.

No. Because in comments some say it works and some say it does not work.

Thanks! Works on my GT630 on ubuntu 13.04
Reading a whole page linked to is also a must instead of just glossing over blindly.
One must be meticulous sometimes when trying things out on a computer.

Valid flow:
1) sudo apt-get install linux-source
2) sudo apt-get install linux
3) sudo apt-get autoremove nvidia-current
4) sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg xserver-xorg-video-all
5) sudo apt-add-repository ppa:noobslab/nvidia-quantal
6) sudo apt-get update
7) sudo apt-get install nvidia-current
8) sudo reboot

Thank you Rugal, that was the answer. followed commands and display went to proper resolution with no extra manipulation
But lower down

I have a GTX 460 OC. So far, installing the newest drivers has been a complete pain. The only one working so far was the 304.51. Everything else.... I just didn't have a desktop anymore. Could only use terminal. I reinstalled Ubuntu 12.10 3 times now. Well, good think I have ambition and do now quit. Anyway, if you have any advice... that will not break my graphic drivers again... are really appreciated. Thanks in advance.
So no. Your 1st quote above probably is not the problem.

Since you probably did not go to this page. The link was included on the previous post of mine. I guess you missed it.

http://www.noobslab.com/2012/06/nvid...ction-for.html

That page has more comprehensive instructions. Read carefully before blindly copy and paste.
Be sure and use the RIGHT driver for your
Code:
VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GF104 [GeForce GTX 460] (rev a1)
As you can see. It makes a difference on what works on what card.

Good luck.

Edit; Whooping cough outbreak here in Texas and my throat feels like I just drank some Ammonia so I will be out sick for the count.

Wink

rokytnji I will do as you said.

On your front (Hooping Cough) can be deadly on people especially as one gets older. Get your self to a doctor and let him make the decisions!
It's like fixing ubuntu drivers, you ask an expert.

I received a "Udate notice" for Ubuntu today (8 Sept, 2013). It was for the driver situation being discussed here. It didn't work on my system with a EVGA GTX460 graphics board.
