from windows starter to linux


Hello! I have toshiba NB510 that runs windows starter I wanna switch to linux which one is the most compatibale?

you can try multiple distros by booting them off usb flash prepared with unetbootin. I would recommend you that you try Ubuntu and Mint first.

According to this review, that machine has one GB RAM. Unless you've installed more, you might want to look at distros using one of the lighter-weight desktops, such as Lubuntu, which uses the LXDE desktop.

Another option would be to install whatever distro you want, then install and use LXDE for a desktop. Different desktops/window managers can coexist quite happily on the same hard drive. I set up a laptop with one GB RAM with Mint for my son, then set up LXDE for him to use on a day-to-day basis.

Also, yooy's advice to try out different distros is excellent--you can do that to decide which one you are most comfortable with.

As much as I am over Ubuntu and think Canonical has made a number of--er--ill-advised decisions, I think the term "spyware" term is a bit strong. For one thing, Ubuntu did not hide its decision. "Hidden" is essential to a "spy."

A web search for "ubuntu spyware" will turn up a number of informative links on this subject.
