Mandriva 2011 freezes

I have used Mandriva for seven years, but today I got a freeze when running lftp from console, which I never experienced before.

Then I restarted the PC and now it is even worse, when I log in as user and starts KDE it freezes and I see a black screen. This happens also if I boot to Mandriva failsafe. Grateful for suggestions!

Hi:

I read through this 'SOLVED' post and it seems like you are not the only member with this problem.
It appears that changing to another version of the kernel helps.

On page 2 this member said that:
"After applying the suggested linux-kernel: 2.6.34.7-1mdv no more freezes!!!"

Hope this helps; Slackervaara

My problems seemed to be caused by a faulty motherboard and capacitors on it. Two capacitors were swollen and one capacitor seemed to leak material at the base. I bought a secondhand motherboard and then the PC worked allright again. It was not all difficult to exchange moterboard.

Not good about the motherboard issue-

Not the best with motherboards but good at installing new PCI cards , RAM and the nature-
Wonder what made that capacitor leak? Overheating?

Glad that you were able to install another Motherboard-

I have read that cheap capacitors of lower quality can cause problems. One characteristic of faulty capacitors is that booting improves, if the PC is on for 5-10 minutes. Bad capacitors looks like this:

I see the difference in the healthy ones vs. the one's that went bad-
Thanks
