Can I partition ssd drive for Ubuntu

Hello,

Newbe here. I am considering buying a Lenovo light weight laptop with 128 GB SSD drive and Windows 8. Will I be able to partition this drive so I can load in a linux operating system (probably Ubuntu) and have the option of booting in windows or linux. Comments on size would be appreciated. Note that I will not be using this computer to store lots of applications or data files. I have a desktop for that.

Thanks, John

There's no fundamental difference between an SSD and a conventional HDD from a software view. That means you can partition and use an SSD in quite the same way as a regular HDD, and that includes the possibility of installing multiple OS's and a boot manager.

There is, however, an issue about Windows 8: AFAIK it requires GPT partitioning (GUID partition table) and will not work with traditional MBR (DOS style) partitioning. However, not all contemporary Linux distros and open source tools support GPT. I'm particularly in doubt with GRUB, the boot loader commonly used with Linux. As to my knowledge, selecting the desired bootable partition is the BIOS's task with GPT partitioning. I've never had to play with GPT and the necessary EFI BIOS, so I can only tell you what I heard through the grapevine.

To make it worse, some notebooks have an artificial restriction inside their BIOS that doesn't allow them to boot anything but Windows.

So be sure to check that specifically when you choose your distro.
