two ways I know of:

easy way:
1) hit [ctrl][alt][F1] keys together to get to a terminal,
2) login as root
3) type "service dm stop" without quotations, this shuts down your xserver
4) when done your fiddling"service dm start" without quotations, this will restart your xserver
5) hit [ctrl][alt][F1] keys together to get to a terminal again
6) type "logout" to close root session

7) hit [ctrl][alt][F7] keys together to get back to gui

Other more common way but more fuss:
type stuff in quotations without the quotations
1) open Konsole terminal session
2) type "su" and give root password when asked
3) type "kedit /etc/inittab"
4) Change the line: "id:5:initdefault:" to read "id:3:initdefault:" and save the file
5) reboot, and xserver will not start until you edit that line in the file back to the way it was
6) login as root when done fiddling and type "kedit /etc/inittab"
7) Change the line: "id:3:initdefault:" to read "id:5:initdefault:" and save the file
8) type "reboot", and you come back to gui
