Firefox install - xpistub lib problems persist

A couple of threads on firefox install problems where users have described an error with "xpistub" library error message being thrown up as they run the installer. I've gone over the threads and tried the suggestions, but nothing works. I'm running Mandrake 9.0, and I have the installer in /usr/local, installing as root. If I run the firefox-installer, and try to do a 'custom' install, I get 6 instances of the following messages in my consol:
"** (firefox-installer-bin:29469): WARNING **: Invalid UTF8 string passed to pango_layout_set_text()"

Is there a connection?

I've also tried installing from the firefox-0.9-i686-linux-gtk2+xft.tar.gz, and it creates a firefox directory, but when I try to run firefox, I get the following message:
" error while loading shared libraries: libXft.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory"

Anyhow, I'd really like to get Firefox to work. I can run Mozilla just fine, and although there are many similarities, Firefox is clearly superior. Any help would be appreciated.

Do you have Xft installed? If not, try installing the non-xft tarball, available at http://ftp34.newaol.com/pub/mozilla....s/0.9/contrib/ for 0.9. If so, try running ldconfig to update your shared libraries, so that Firefox can find it.

I can't tell you what's going on with the UTF8 thing, sorry.

If it still doesn't work (it didn't for me) just download the version without the installer from here:

Then extract it to where you want.

I had the same problem and found the solution in my case was very simple. I was running ./firefox-installer-bin when I got the error. I later found that the proper procedure was to run ./firefox-installer, which is a script that sets up the environment properly for installation before running ./firefox-installer-bin.

Once I did that the install ran very smoothly.

The "xpistub" problem is because firefox 1.0 binaries are compiled with glibc 2.3.something.

If you have RH8 like i did who have glibc 2.2.95 you have to upgrade glibc
(download rpms and use "rpm -Fvh glibc*")

I found it out when i downloaded the version without the installer.
After upgrading the installer worked fine for me.

Mandrake 9 is as old as rh8.
i think it's the glibc problem.

type:
rpm -qa| grep glibc
to see your glibc version

u said u tried installing a i686 version of firefox, try an i586. It is true that mdk 9.0 is old which can be a problem if u want to compile something. Heres something i can suggest you do though, goto rpm.pbone.net and search for xpistub, then download the rpm of the librarires for mdk 9.0 and install it, then try reinstalling firefox again. Thats what i have done in the past for other programs such as mplayer, xmms, giFT, Apollon.

I have been having this same error and while I'd like to upgrade my glibc I have no idea how to... I downloaded a file from a link in this thread and I am now the proud owner of "glibc-2.3.2-2.3.3.diff" but I have no idea how to patch glibc to actually be that new version.

Ok, now that I've done some reading, it looks like playing around with glibc is destined to fail for a newbie like me... I've had to give up on linux time and time again because things like this happen. I'd hate to shelve my linux computer again because being unable to install Firefox was dependant on me rearranging the system's DNA. Any thoughts or should I try a potentially system-ruining operation?

do rpm -qa | grep glibc
as root to see what glibc rpms you have installed ( glibc-common, glibc maybe even glibc-devel)

Then download the new ones somewhere and as a root do
rpm -Fhv glibc*

do not try rpm -i or rpm -U and especially rpm -e.
Be carefull!!
glibc is one of your most important libraries. Besides the kernel almost everything uses this library

Update the rpms only from your dustr. vendor and only those suitable for your distr.

Same with slackware 10, if you run firefox-installer-bin only. Running with firefox-installer shellscript in console will work.

This is what I did to get it going on my Red Hat 8 box:

First of all, as indicated in this thread I did this in a terminal window:
rpm -qa | grep glibc

I found my system was at do 2.2.93-5. I needed to be beyond
2.3 somewhere to get Firefox to work.

I went to the Red Hat site and searched for "Red Hat 8 RPMs" and
got quite a listing:

The files needed are:
glibc-2.3.2-4.80.8.i386.rpm
glibc-common-2.3.2-4.80.8.i386.rpm
glibc-debug-2.3.2-4.80.8.i386.rpm
glibc-debug-static-2.3.2-4.80.i386.rpm
glibc-devel-2.3.2-4.80.8.i386.rpm
glibc-profile-2.3.2-4.80.8.i386.rpm
glibc-utils-2.3.2-4.80.8.i386.rpm.

You need to download all of them to a directory on your system somewhere.

Then, in that directory open a terminal window and execute the
following command:

rpm -Fhv glibc*

It took just a few minutes - you will see a percentage amount
scroll up until you get to 100% if all goes well.

After this I was able to install Firefox 1.0 without problems at all.

Good luck - it's not that hard, it just takes time.
