Hey guys. I have a question: Where's the Gentoo forum?
Sure, Gentoo DOES have an official message board, but it's not as good as linuxquestions.org (VB > phbb). Honestly, lots of people are making the switch, especially since the docs have been re-writen to be more "user friendly" and 2004.0 just came out.
Gentoo's population grows by the minute. I think you should incorperate a Gentoo section in the Distrobutions forum.
Just hear me out -- you don't have to do this, but I think, from my experience here, that it's a god idea.
Distribution forums are only created when the distribution itself will support the board. For example, we have the support of Patrick V from Slackware for the Slackware forum and in the Lindows forum we have a member of Lindows staff.
While Jeremy is usually happy to contact distro makers to ask them if they would be interested, you as the user have your part to play. Why not contact Gentoo and say that as a Gentoo user it would be of help to you to have a supported forum in LQ?
Actually a long time ago Jeremy did ask Gentoo if they would like to have a forum here and for us to recognize them, have a few members come over and help out. After he sent them the email, they had their own forums up within a week.. I guess that was another way of saying.. "No"...
Well that answers my question Thanks, mods. Appreciate the nice and quick responses without the normal bashing around here
Well, I guess gentoo users like me can just go hang out at the Gentoo Forums where the terrible edicate ruins the fun
I guess it really doesn't suit these boards anyway - since this is more of a helping forum dedicated to newbies, and not for people that are under the Gentoo leadership
Just because there isn't a specific forum for a distro doesn't mean you shouldn't ask questions here. And although the site title is "...where Linux newbies come for help", a quick read through the posts here would show that we have questions ranging from absolute "newbie" questions right up to the die hard long term Linux expert questions.
Basically, we have an absolutely huge user base here and it is rare for a question to go unanswered or unsolved. If you have Gentoo knowledge and can help others with their problems you would be an asset to this site and to this community.
for the most part I put all my general linux questions here, anything specifically related to a failed ebuild goes to gentoo forums because it is usually a bug anyways and is quickly fixed, I agree that the gentoo forums are not exactly the same atmosphere, off the wall is attrocious but the help is generally good since everyone is going through the same things, in fact I rarely ask help questions because someone else has asked the exact same thing already. I do enjoy hanging out there sometimes but when I get tired of the flaming and the religion anti-war or anti-bush zealots get too annoying I come back here and enjoy a NICE community again, there is only ONE thing that I really like more about the gentoo forums than here and that is the spirit of testing, beta testing in specific or alpha, especially with the love or evil kernel sources, the tremendous efforts with reiser4 xouvert Xserver and everything else, if we could get that here I would find it hard to even go there anymore.

Not really, well the fire is put out rather quickly. Some forums just don't care what is posted, etc. LQ.org we do care and try to present ourselves as professional community and such.
just go there to off the wall, any thread with a hint of a religious tie and it will gain 2 pages a day or more with exactly the same arguments found in hundreds of other threads, I've never seen that happen here
