Okay make sure u update ur urpmi! u can easily do that here

And try 9.0 and cooker and update ur urpmi! Oh and if u just typed in urmpi gcc, that won't install the packages for you..it will just list all the packages with gcc in their name. From that list, pick a package and use urpmi *FullPackageName* ..just make sure u don't install only one package.......or ur linux will crash and burn like mine did

I'm probably wrong since you are currently running it yourself, however I've ran it in the past and seem to remember just typing:
urpmi programname
And it downloaded and installed the packages for me. Also, according to the man page:

Just launch urpmi followed by what you think is the name of the pack- age(s), and urpmi will: - Propose different package names if availables and quit. - If only one corresponding package is found, check whether dependen- cies are already installed, or not. - If not, propose to install the dependencies and then install all required dependencies and the package.

The lost note 'If not, propose to install the dependencies and then install all
required dependencies and the package.'
Says to me that it will install the packages with just:
urpmi gcc



Not that your way wouldn't work, I just don't think mine wouldn't either

So, you don't have any other means of installing? Also, just to set it straight, just type:
urpmi gcc

You may miss some packages otherwise

A few days though? Really? Wow, I can't remember dial up that well, I'm sorry to hear that. Do you have any chance of getting that box on a network and getting some updates? If so, hold off til then, get it on the network, fire up urpmi and update everything you can and get gcc installed at that point.

Nope, no high speed network anyway. I can remote access my university's net but it's still through dial-up if you live off-campus. Gonna have to wait until payday and get myself a new one.

Alot of people recommend the external serials. Something wrong with the internal Linux compatible ones?

External modems are better, they give you lots of pretty flashing lights. They're also not normally WinModems. As the name implies, winmodems don't always work on linux

Sure do. However, I cut back to 4-5 hours of sleep, it allows me more time to post on LQ. I also have a 10+ hour a day job, but I post at lunch, and at slow times
