(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

Fatal server error:
no screens found

When reporting a problem related to a server crash, please send
the full server output, not just the last messages.

This can be found in the log file "/var/log/XFree86.0.log".

Please report problems to submit@bugs.debian.org.
In fact I used to get a similar "(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration." , but then the problem seemed to be that the nv driver (my graphics card is a NVidia GeForce2 MX/MX 400) couldnt use color depth 24. After I changed colour depth to 16 (and checked resolution and refresh freq to be the same as I use when in Windows), this warning disappeared but still unable to find a valid screens

Im not very sure how to proceed since the log doesnt give many clues as to what is the actual problem

It is also strange that if I run XFree86cfg I get to use a graphic interface no probs, so I really dont think my config settings for the display/graphic card can be very wrong.

Any tips will be appreciated

You certainly have a bad configuration.

Sorted!! In the end all I had to do was to reconfigure XFree86 with

#dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86

like Macondo suggets in his thread, and when asked whether to use the kernel framebuffer to communicate with the video card, just choose "NO" . From the context you could think that the safest option is "YES", and I think thats the default, but guy that wrote "The Very Verbose Debian 3.0 Installation Guide" (see again Macondos thread) also had to go for "NO". To be fair with the newbie population, it is very hard to see from the XFree86.0.log (see my posting above) that this was the problem.

In fact, now I can choose 24 colour depth without any problem.

(a note aside, before this I also had to point /dev/mouse to /dev/psaux by using the command:
ln -s /dev/mouse /dev/psaux
to get my mouse working, maybe u need to try that as well)

For your next trick...

try installing Sarge with the net-installer, much better experience, newer apps. =)

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...icle&artid=330

The link in the article will take you to the link for the rc-3, same instructions apply.

After the installation of sarge, read the posting about the Debian configuration post-installation:

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...hreadid=224547

Move to the Debian forum in this site.
