fedora 3 autologon

I would like for my linux box to automatically log on as a user (suppose the power went out. The box would reboot) but I would want the user to log in so my apache server would run. (Or would it run anyway?)

I know a registry hack to do this in windows, I am sure there has to be a way to do this in Fedora, more simply.

Hi.

You don't need to login for your apache service to start running. It will start running as long as you have it set up to do so.

type..... chkconfig --list httpd

httpd 0 off 1 off 2 off 3 on 4 off 5 off 6 off

You should get a return that looks something like that. That means that the apache service (httpd) is starting on only runlevel 3 on my machine.

So if you wanted it to run on your machine just run.... chkconfig --level 345 httpd on

This will make apache start up whenever you boot your machine up.

If you want to log your machine in automatically, you can do so by running gdmsetup.

However doing that is a security issue.

THx for the info. I'm not really worries about security. It's on a private lan. It's my learnin' box. Im' takin' an OS class so we have to modify the kernel all the time anyway and it is easy to fry the box in the first place. I am making a file to resetup all of my preferences once done reinstalling.

thx mang,
Zakk

There are several distros that do have an auto-logon feature. To really answer your question the poster should have given you both ways to get it done. You never know. You may actually want to do that some time in the future.
