Gedit all the way

It's all about Gedit. Syntax highlighting for every language imaginable. Ooohh yeah. Can't get much better than that.

geek airlines -- LOL

imo, the vi/emacs war is idiotic. this animousity should be re-focused on the real enemy to computer productivity which is microsoft.

SciTE. Works for linux and windows and it is small and excellent. I felt guilty for not buying TextPad after using it for so long, so I looked at another free text editor that was comparable, and SciTE is better than text pad (more customizable and more features. A slightly higher learning curve too), but it is also there for linux. Needless to say, it removed my guilt since it is completely free!

No. It also causes Cancer, so don't do it kids.

Of course, the question is, why would you have Vi installed at all? I mean, come on!

The answer is as simple as that: To avoid people to have to use emacs.

Btw, i like your signature (C-x C-s C-x k), reminds me of a costudent of mine who once wanted to make a simple copy paste, but instead deleted his whole file and saved it and closed emacs... after about twenty non-memorizable key-combinations... (i think he thought he knew...)

As you can see then, Emacs is essential to weed out the sub-standard hackers / admins. People who successfully use Emacs are therefore the cream of the crop. Obviously.

/me continues to run for cover, laughing maniacally

Good point though. But imagine how much time a vi user can save with commands that are made of 1 or 2 keystrokes. Efficiency is vi's word. And just think about the unnecessary attrition of your keyboard...

Interesting. Unlike those who chose to torture themselves with Vi, I do not have to move my left hand as far as the Esc key to 'change mode', and can therefore keep my fingers closer to the 'home' keys.

As for the attrition, I worship at the alter of the IBM Model M keyboard. Please see the following link to see why any excessive use is not an issue.

Also, Vi smells. You know it makes sense.

Best. Keyboard. Ever.

I've got a Model M (not sure of the precise variant) on my P100. It's not just the win keys, but the multimedia keys and everything else, that keep it from remaining my primary keyboard but it's still great. That's a freaking tank of a keyboard and the 350-P100 itself does a fair imitation of a battleship. Completely different from the current flimsy stuff. Zippos and Bics; IBM keyboards and everything else.

So swap capslock and escape. And doesn't emacs use EscapeMetaAltControlShift?

Mmm. Roses.

In all seriousness, I just want my editor to edit, is all. And I like how vi is really ex which is based on ed, which ties in with sed, grep, awk, more/less, and everything else Unix-ish. (I hated both vi and emacs at first but sitting down with the mighty ed was the key to unlocking vi.) To each their own.
