I am trying to install software on Mandriva Linux 2010.1. Yes, I know it's an old version, but mostly it works well for me. I have Mandriva Linux on Mandriva Linux. It's via Virtual Box. I can install software fine on the real thing, last I checked, and I don't want to mess up it's setup. But on the virtual server, doing it the same way, I cannot install software. It cannot find the packages.
When was the last time you checked? Mandriva free versions were end of life awhile ago and the company shutdown recently so would not expect it to find any packages.
I downloaded all the files from a mirror, and used genhdlist2 to make a type of a distribution source. The files are safe on my NAS. I checked, and the files are still there. I redid the genhdlist2, and it still complains. But only on the virtual server.
P.S. The updatedb portion failed. With or without sudo. First I tried without, as I was already running as root, then when that failed, just for the heck of it, I tried with sudo, and it still failed. Appearently, that program is not installed.
Mandriva on Mandriva doesn't seem to work for whatever reason, at least with 2010.1 on 2010.1. It's untested whether Mageia on Mageia would work, or Mandriva on Mageia.
I like Mageia for a start, but it's not quite ready for my everyday use yet. It doesn't have the features I need readily available for my server system. It also doesn't have the software selection I need, whereas Mandriva does. So I wanted to stick with Mandriva for the system I'm building.
However, it wouldn't work, when I did Mandriva on Mandriva. The OS works, but the software won't install, so it's useless. I tried something creative, and experimented with Mandriva on Windows 7, and wala, no more problems. Of course, I had to spend more money on a new refurbished machine, so that I could have a valid license to use. I will try to upgrade that to Windows 10, in good faith that it will keep working, but if I find out in time, I can always downgrade again.
I use partimage imaging technology heavily, so the fact that I don't have a reinstallation disc, doesn't stop me with the refurbished machine. I just make a factory image before I do anything else, and then build off of that. I can create my own re-installation discs these days...
So while I didn't find a pretty solution, I found one that will work. Having Windows underneath changes the plan and description of the two servers I was trying to build a little though. But not significantly. In the end, I will have the same services I desire, whichever one is underneath.
