Now as for the ATI/AMD issue. From what I understand, GNOME and it's derivatives - Gnome Shell, Unity and Cinnamon do not play well with Radeon cards regardless of distro. This leads me to believe that we may need to step away from the GNOME paradign for a little bit, and possibly look at xfce, lxde or kde as desirable alternatives. Will keep you posted .

Been awhile since I've checked in. Well, I have moved on to Fedora 16 KDE (and a day away from F17) and have tried Ubuntu 12.04 LTS since it's release and still have the lock ups on the keyboard/touchpad. So I guess if I ever need to use Ubuntu for any reason it's going on a VM for now.
Oh, and openSUSE 12.1 has the same blank screen issue as Ubuntu 11.10/Fedora 16 had regarding the Radeon 6520G. So that's not an option.
Here's hoping it'll be resolved in a kernel update or Ubuntu 12.10. Whichever comes first.
