FreeBSD ports/packages questions

I'm running FreeBSD. I installed a lot of packages and ports, before realizing that managing them i.e updating them all in one go might be difficult.
Am i right in thinking that, for a workstation with Xorg and Gnome2 installed, a safe and easy first step getting all the non-base software up-to-date is:
Code:
#pkgdb -Fu
#portupgrade -RarPb -x Xorg -x Gnome2
?
Can exclusions break the system, in some cases(if you forget the -b option)??. Or, if you use the -x option might you be left with a system that is in a non-ideal state due to dependency issues?
Thank you very much for your replies
regards

Hi,

Since there's quite some "silence" in this thread, allow me to kick the ball to get it rolling

I use Arch Linux (nowwhere near as "hardcore" as BSD, I know) and my non-expert opinion is: if the package management sees a problem, it should not proceed. The system should be pretty safe.

I'm not well versed in BSD (as I said, I wanted to get the ball rolling) but I suspect that the system checks dependencies and stuff for you...but, then again, I only got up to the basics of BSD's package management...

This is the command I used to upgrade all the applications I had installed
Code:
# portupgrade -af
It took me four days to complete the update because there are some options in the actual packages that you need to set manually. So make sure if you update your packages to leave the computer running with no interruptions.

Good luck to you!

Sorry, skipped this thread. I think vermaden maintains some BSD forum and I find him helping people here more often.

Regards.
