my RHEL5 external monitor connection wont work

I have DEll N4050 laptop. In windows 7 mode the external monitor/projector works fine. When in RHEL5 mode, when i define dual head, the x server hangs.I installed ati-driver-installer-11-11-x86.x86_64.run. Although it has ATI HD6040M card, ATI people said the following.
"It's a Power-Express (switchable graphics) laptop. Power Express requires a working Intel Graphics Driver, since the integrated Intel Graphics device drives the display hardware even when the Radeon does the rendering. RHEL 5 doesn't have support for this Intel graphics device. Therefore we cannot support the Radeon graphics with our driver."

I am using vesa driver for the X -windows which works to 1024x768. ALL i want is to get the external monitor to work. I would appreciate any tips on how I can solve this problem.thanks. ayyangar Jan 17

I don’t have this machine, but it sounds like you have to leave the Radeon graphics card out of the game and use dual head only by setting up the Intel graphics if possible. There are drivers from Intel for their graphics card too.

Dear Reuti: thanks. rhel5 comes with intel driver but it wont match the HD graphics they are using in N4050. i downloaded the intel driver source and when i build it, it wont find acrun3 new version. is there any built in driver available for intel HD graphics that runs on RHEL5?
thanks

You tried to search for it: autoconf and install it in a personal space to avoid any side effects:
Code:
$ ./configure --prefix=$HOME/local/autoconf-2.68

i dont have configure file yet. i only have configure.ac. i installed autoconf 2.68. then it asked for xorg-macros 1.8 or later. i installed xorg-macros 1.9. they are all in /usr/local/share.
but it still asks me xorg-nacros 1.8 or later. next step? - thanks- ayyangar

Please check the options to configure with --help. Often paths to additional libraries can be set.

Well, ich you have to update too many libraries it’s worth to look into upgrading the installation. You could try to install on an external disk first and test with any distribution you like whether it’s working in principle with it. Then you can decide how to proceed with the main installation.
