ATX power supply 20 or 24 pins?

Hi,

I'm putting together my first desktop pc and would appreciate it if somebody could give me some advice about the power supply.

I have bought an ASUS P5V800-MX motherboard which has an ATX power supply connector with 24 pins. I also bought an ATX case but the power supply only has a 20 pin connector on it. Do I need to go and buy another power supply to suit this board? I'm a bit confused because I was assured the case was suitable for this board

No, you do not have to buy a new powersupply. There is a 20 to 24 pins cable in every computer store. You should buy one like those.

Ok it's not a cable, but you can attach it to ur powersupply cable.

If you cannot get one at a local store try Ebay that is where I had to get mine and make sure you get the right one they come in both varieties 20 pin power supply to 24 pin motherboard and 24 pin power supply to 20 pin motherboard.

The 20 pin should fit OK into the 24 pin PSU connector as it is, IMHO no need to adapt. Adapt reqd for 24-20!
Line up the snap, U should notice 4 MT pins {2x2} on one side. Do not remember if L or R, Will check my various DT setups @ Home later. Make sure U read Asus Manual that it allows 20 pin (IT should), (Maybe check an Asus forum for board specific problems, sometimes the only place they get posted) I looked pic, nice compact Mobo!
Q? Does your new PSU have enough juice to run your system?? Some case w/ PSU deals, PSU lacks the juice. CONGRATS PADDY on building your OWN. Any other distro(s) ya planning on using, Dual Boot??
Normally ONLY time U C problem is if U force connector into the wrong place, should slide in easy!

The 24 pin connector should actually be a 20 pin connector attached to a 4 pin connector. You can separate them just by unsnapping them

Thanks everyone, I have been reading the ASUS manual, doesn't mention anything about using a 20-pin connector however it does say you need a minimum of 300W for this board. The power supply I have has a max of 185W so looks like I might have to get a new one anyway!

Prob will just be running FC5 to start with I think.

If you can afford it get a decent brand name power supply like emermax, ocz, antec, thermaltake .... they make these with good quality parts and will give you many years of service, go for something around the 500w range maybe even 600w just to give yourself room for upgrading of your computer in the future.

Thanks, unfortunately my laptop died the other day so I'm trying to replacing it with a tight budget ha ha. I might find a good deal on eBay for a power supply!

Good chance of it I got my Enermax 465VE on Ebay for $25US with $15 shipping so for $40 I got basically a $100+ power supply works great.

Got a power supply today and everything is up and running, only could get a 450W but it's better than nothing! Thanks everyone for the help and advice :-)
