Latitude X1 12.1" WXGA (Intel 915 graphics) display problem

Hey

So under the tree this year, the fat man left me a new Dell Latitude X1 subnotebook. It's got a 12.1" WXGA widescreen display at 1280x768. I got Mandriva 2006 installed okay, but it will only display at 1024x768. The display is stretched to fit the whole screen. I tried using the "Change The Screen Resolution" tool in the Mandriva Control Center to switch to 1280x768. But when I switch to 1280x768, the display is bigger than the screen, and I have to scroll left and right to see the entire thing (it's like it's still "stretched to fit", just at a higher resolution). I did some reading and found the 855resolution and 915resolution tools to change the vbios resolution for the Intel 855 and 910/915 chipset, but there's not really any instructions on how to use it that I could find. So after reading vague instructions for a different distribution, I got as far as installing an rpm for the 855resolution utility and patching one of the resolutions to 1280x768, but the instructions past that were for a different distribution, and I couldn't get it working (apparently you need to add a startup script after you patch the vbios so that it will use the patched resolution setting when you reboot). Can anybody help me out? Either with the 855 or 915resolution utilities, or some other creative solution?

Thanks!

Update:

I downloaded and installed from source the 915resolution utility, followed the instructions in the readme, got one of my resolutions patched to 1280x768, changed my xorg.conf, and added /usr/bin/915resolution 5c 1280 768 to "rc.local". I restarted, and it's the same thing as before: my display is wider than my screen. Any help would be great.

Still no joy. Anybody at all? I'll put this in Laptops and Handhelds too, maybe I'll have better luck there.

If it's of interest to anyone, I reinstalled Mandriva, recompiled and installed 915resolution (after quitting X, which I didn't do last time, which is why the patch didn't work), patched one of my resolutions, restarted X, and now the resolution is okay. There's just one thing: The patch isn't permanent, so I have to add a line to one of my startup scripts so the patch executes before X starts. I tried adding it to "rc.local" as per the instructions, but it doesn't work, I have to restart the X server every time I reboot before my resolution appears as it should. So I need to know where to add it in the Mandriva startup scripts so that it will run before X starts. I think I'll post a new thread for this new questions, seeing as how this one hasn't generated a single response.

Problem solved! A simple matter of renaming the script that rc.local is symlinked to so that it runs earlier in the startup sequence. Fully documented here (by me): http://mandrivaonadellX1.50webs.com in case anybody's interested.
