get a black screen after RHEL AS starting first boot.
hi,i am a newbe to linux.
yesterday i decide to learn linux,so i installed RHEL AS 3.0 ( a windows xp pro is installed before )
when i boot my system into linux, at first, everything is ok, and i can see many items marked ok in the screen, but after " Starting first boot" displayed, my moniter went black, linux login window not apear either.
i am sure that i chose the right value of my video card (nvidia 5600) and my moniter (samsung 765MB)
please tell me how to resolve if you know ,thanks a lot....
It's either the video card driver (most likely) or the monitor (next-to-most-likely).
You'll probably need to boot to Runlevel 3 (text mode) to fix the problem.
To do this, reboot the computer (reset it manually if you have to).
At the GRUB bootloader screen highlight the kernel you wish to boot from using your up/ down arrow keys and type the letter e.
This will place you in edit mode
Scroll down to the kernel line and press "e" again.....your cursor will be at the end of the kernel line...press the spacebar and type in the number 3
Hit enter
Then press "b" to boot.
You should be able to boot into text mode now.
Login as root.
Type the following command:
redhat-config-xfree86
The display configuration window appears.
Click the Advanced tab...you'll see a section for monitor configuration and video card configuration. Select video card configuration.
In the list of video adapters look for VESA and select it. Click OK and exit out of the configuration tool.
Reboot. You should be able to boot into graphical mode with the generic Vesa driver. If you can do that, then I recommend getting Nvidia's driver from nvidia.com and installing that.
If you can't get the redhat-config-xfree86 menu to come up, let me know.
HI, hkb33
thanks for your reply very much!
today,i ran into runlevel 3 succesfully,but after i enter"redhat-config-xfree86", I get a black screen again.
looking forward your replay
thanks again .
The video ram section on your adapter may be different than what is above.
When you are finished typing, press the Esc key then type the following to save the file and exit the vi editor:
:wq
Once that is done, try starting x with startx.
Hopefully that will get you to where X will start without killing the monitor.....keep in mind that if this works you are running with the generic VESA driver, not your Nvidia one. If you want to take full advantage of the Nvidia card, I suggest downloading Nvidia's drivers.
