This may help some people with sound issues. I have sblive! and boston acoustic digital speakers, and using alsa in FC2, i had no sound to start but after doing these things, sound is perfect.

Thumbs up success

First, I'd like to thank all the wonderful peoples who volunteer their time to post helpful suggestions to these forums.

Secondly, I'd like to explain the fix that worked for me.
I have a (snd-cmipci) soundcard, which has always worked fine under linux/windows/OS of choice, up until FC2, so it irked me to no end when I couldn't make it work. I believe I tried every fix on these forums that seemed remotely applicable, until I stumbled onto this one on my own. Can't guarantee it will work for you, but it's worth a shot.

I ran alsa mixer, and just started turning off some of the things I didn't immediately recognize, while playing an audio-file, hoping to stumble onto something. The gold nugget was when I hit the Exchange device near the far right with my mighty m of disablement...immediately sound came up. At this point it was very scratchy and the high end was cut out, almost like it was doing a bad job of voice removal. So, I decided to start hitting the IEC958 devices. Once I hit IEC958 0 device, sound was normal and happy, and I was listening to Angelo Badalamenti once again . Thanks again to everyone who posted here, and gave me the right track to follow.

Cheers, and good luck.

Exclamation ALSA Project aware of the problem

Just went to the ALSA bug tracking section, and there is a slew of intel8x0 bugs. I'm afraid the solution to this one is going to be patience or getting a compatible sound card

(*sigh*)

my 2 cents

Lightbulb Fedora, no sound

I have had problems with sound both in ASPLinux 9.2 (based on Red Hat 9.2) and Fedora Core 3.
I have integrated sound card SiS, which uses snd-intel8x0 driver.

In ASPLinux I had to launch xmms with OSS output plugin and drag the volume control off the zero point. But still I had to switch after that to esound output plugin to be able to adjust the sound volume.
Fedora Core 3 appeared to be even worse. I could not enable the sound with any way I knew. At this forum I have read that switching off "IEC958 Capture Monitor" helps, - it really has solved my problem.

So, this is the solution:
- Launch alsamixer
- Go with cursor to the far right end. There must be a bar "IEC958 Capture Monitor", its short name below is "IEC958 C".
- Mute that bar by pressing M.
This really helps. Of course, the "Master" bar must have non-zero value.
The alternative way is to use K-mix (the graphical front-end).

However, in Fedora Core 3, I still cannot adjust the sound volume. My earlier solution with using esound does not work: the volume do become adjustable but in FC3 the esound plugin makes distortions to the sound.
Who knows how to solve the problem with adjusting the volume?

upgrade from RH9 to fedora core 2

hey all i have read throught this whole thread and I am still unsure as to what to do to resolve my no sound problem also. I am running an asus a7m266 board with onboard cmedia CMI8738. I have tried to run /sbin/lspcui and cat /etc/modprobe.conf

results:
00:05.0 Multimedia audio controller: C-Media Electronics Inc CM8738 (rev 0)
cat /etc/modprobe.conf-----> alias etho dmfe
cat /proc/asound/cards - no soundcard
when i run sound detection the vendor, module- snd-cmipci and model cmi8738 are all found. I have also knowtived that when I ran cat /etc/modprobe/conf I did no recieve as much info as most of you. In addition to all of this when I tried to run aumix--> i get bash command aumix not found

Also when my comp loads i recieve and error that says: error while initializing the sound driver: device /dev/dsp cant be opened (no such device). And when I restart my comp I get an erroe message:
mixer settings ----alsactel: save_state: 1061: no sound card found

I have also tried to follow the directions on URL=http://alsa.opensrc.org/index.php?page=Quick+Install+-+cmipci]alsaopensrc.org[/URL]
But i get stock on the part wher it says to Now insert the modules into the kernel space.

modprobe snd-cmipci;modprobe snd-pcm-oss;modprobe snd-mixer-oss;modprobe snd-seq-oss.

thanks all,
Jason!!

emu10k1 fc2 have sound no MIDI

Ok, strange problem.

I installed Fedora Core 2 (from the Red Hat Fedora Linux 2 Bible CDs) I did a full install with all devel packages and all multimedia apps. I am aiming at using this PC for a recording studio. I downloaded and installed Rosegarden 4 via RPM: rosegarden4-0.9.9-1.rhfc2.ccrma.i386.rpm. also I have updated my kernel to whatever the newest is that came out today as well as whatever other updates there were. I have sound as far as .wav, .mp3 and line/mic input goes. My problem is that my MIDI is not working at all. I have checked mixer settings (Kmix and alsamix) and have tried numerous midi players/secquencers. I am running a Soundblaster PCI 512.

info from /etc/modprobe.conf :

alias eth0 8139too
alias snd-card-0 snd-emu10k1
install snd-emu10k1 /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install snd-emu10k1 && /usr/sbin/alsactl restore >/dev/null 2>&1 || :
remove snd-emu10k1 { /usr/sbin/alsactl store >/dev/null 2>&1 || : ; }; /sbin/modprobe -r --ignore-remove snd-emu10k1
alias usb-controller uhci-hcd

info from /sbin/lspci :

00:01.0 PCI bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82C598/694x [Apollo MVP3/Pro133x AGP]

I am not a "new" linux user, but I have never really messed with the internals of kv2.6.x
My last distro was mandrake 8.0 which rosegarden would not install due to outdated libraries ie KDE and QT etc

Please help!

I am having a similar (or the same problem) except it's on a new installation of Fedora Core 3. Checking the Volume Control dialog did not resolve my problem. I have unmuted and increased the volume of everything that appeared applicable in that dialog and still no sound.

system-config-soundcard attempts to use the snd-intel8x0 module. when playing the test sound I hear nothing.

Windows XP identifies my sound card as "SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio"

from /sbin/lspci

00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corp. 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 03)

from /etc/modprobe.conf

alias snd-card-0 snd-intel8x0
options snd-card-0 index=0
install snd-intel8x0 /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install snd-intel8x0 && /usr/sbin/alsactl restore >/dev/null 2>&1 || :
remove snd-intel8x0 { /usr/sbin/alsactl store >/dev/null 2>&1 || : ; }; /sbin/modprobe -r --ignore-remove snd-intel8x0

I also looked at the alsa docs and was unable to extract any useful information (-I- couldn't).

Any help in troubleshooting would be very appreciated. Thanks.

Hi,

I had a problem that I could play system sounds but couldn't play CDs.
The problem was that I didn't have cable running from CD drive
to motherboard. It is worth to check

Thanks.

My setup is a laptop where CD sound worked previously.

I have things working now (almost). After finding a few more threads on the topic I found I needed to disable the "External Amplifier". Doing this allowed the Sound Card Test to play the sound.

I now can play those sounds and I get sound during DVD playback but I cannot get sound during CD playback or when playing QuickTIme, etc in my web browser.

At any rate my sound card appears to be working so I must be missing some minor setting or have some other item in my mixer that needs to be changed. I have yet to find it however.
