modelines for /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Hi,

I heard about modelines for you monitor. How can I make those modelines? I heard about a command line tool but can't remember the name. Where do I have to put those modelines in the xorg.conf file? I need an example, because I'm a beginner

And if they are set in the xorg.conf file, where can I choose those modelines later?

modelines tend to be a pretty vague thing to deal with. They are placed in the Monitor section of your config file and you can use xvidtune in X, or loads or online generators you can find in google. the format of a modeline uses a text identifer e.g. "1024x768" at the start which will override any default mode with the same name. you would then just specifiy that resolution name later on as normal in the screen section of your xorg.conf. You could call your modeline dave if you wanted to.. but that's just daft...

You can see specific lines being set here for example: http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Xorg_HDTV but you should only be looking at defining your own if you know you actually need to. most people will never go anywhere near them.

Why do you want to generate modelines for your monitor ?
Many people were in need of custom modelines in pre - 4.X versions of X server.
Now, all you have to do is to put the Horizontal - Vertical Refresh rate and the X server default modelines will do great.

i put in the hor and vert refresh rate (as in the manual) and I still can't choose 100 Hz for my monitor (which is supported by the monitor)
That's why I wanted to make a modeline

If you know a better idea to set it to 100 hz please let me know!!
