With nvidia drivers ,screen freezes or crashes

It's said that Sabayon was tested on a Pentium 1.6gh processor with 512mb of ram. I have a Pentium 2.4gh processor with 2gb ram. The deal is it eigther freezes or it crashes. I have been at it for over a week trying to fix the problem. This is with both Gentoo-11.2-x86 and Sabayon-7-x86 both with Gnome desktop. I have search the forums and googled the problem.
Like I said it either freezes or it crashes (goes to black screen with funny face saying "OOPs we >yada yada).Went as far as copying the xorg.conf file from one other machine to this machine to see if it would work--better,but it still crashed. The problem machine works great with Fedora-15 and Gnome-3, that's why I decided to try Sabayon. I installed the nvidia-drivers both with equo install and the drivers downloaded from nVidia's website. Constructive critism appretiated..

Thanx

No criticism, just a comment. Before the nouveau kernel module became usable on my system, I'd have to use the nvidia driver - nv always froze my system. On more than one occasion after a kernel, Xorg, or nvidia upgrade, I could not get a working nvidia driver with the new setup, even when the nvidia driver would compile without errors. I just kept extra copies of the latest working kernel and xorg rpms handy and would downgrade often.

And a question - does the nouveau driver work for you?

Hey,Doc.. Haven't tried the nouveau driver as of yet. I'm still trying the nvidia driver.Success wasn't built on someone quiting. I'm thinking of your idea of downgrading the kernel to 2.6.3x, and keeping Gnome-3 and see what that does for me.
Thanx for the help..will get back later.

you should read and understand how video works and get\s installed.
i use debian and derivates> good example how to get NVIDIA proprietary working on any debian is here>

http://wiki.debian.org/NvidiaGraphicsDrivers
also is covered nouveau and vesa section.

perhaps there is similar how-to for sabayon, but i am sure the main logic for building and loading/unloading nvidia driver modules will main the same. in short i can tell you have failed some steps with KMS kernel parts and you still have loaded nouveau module, wich conflicts with NVIDIA one.

You think so?? Androdik

nvidia/sabayon

I've had problems with sabayon installs on navidia chipsets, usually after an update. Worst was when using GeForce 7025/nForce 630a but with GeForce 6150 SE/nForce 430 and a later version of sabayon (8 as opposed to 5.4) it worked fine without any serious tweaking, dispite warnings from Sulphur.

Are you using Optimus technology?? See the output when you run lspci in terminal..

If you're using it, I do have a tip for you. I'm using Sabayon too on my machine, and yesterday I've installed Bumblebee, and know all of my NVIDia problems are gone. Here's the link to install Bumblebee on Sabayon: http://www.danilopianini.org/index.p...cles&Itemid=23

Hope it helps!

Cheers.

Sabayon 10 seems to work fine with nvidia chipset but not sure about updates, installs are fine. The output from lspci is:
