Why choose Sabayon?

hey

I have tried Sabayon a little, and I have thought a little about switching to it. But is there something special about Sabayon that other distros don't have?

Why would people choose Sabyon instead of for example Mandriva and Ubuntu?
What's good about it?

Thanks for answer :)

Distributions are mostly a personal choice
So just install and use it, and see
Only thing I can think of, sabayon is gentoo based, ubuntu is debian based

For a start Sabayon is a good distro
But there are a lot of good distros.
So it came down to you're own appreciation of the distro.

Sabayon is the easiest rolling-release distro to use in my opinion. I have tried Arch and found it not to be newbie friendly. If you want to try Arch and you are a newbie... try Chakra Linux or KahelOS both based on Arch.

Sabayon comes with out-of-the-box functionality and they have a nice user-community who will help you out if you have any problems.

Sabayon if a fine choice if you have high bandwidth internet.
Packages and updates are big.
Anyone with limited internet like dialup or satellite will not appreciate Sabayon or Gentoo.

I liked CalculateLinuxScratch; a nice buildable base install
http://www.calculate-linux.org/main/en/cls

and I liked CL Gnome too.

:D:D:DI am on Sabayon 5.3 and its a very functional and nice to look at and use distro...so that means I can spend more time with distros that require more attention thus increasing my learning... I like Sabayon... recommended :)

I tried the Sabayon CDX the other day and it seemed ideal for someone with a reasonable internet connection but a small computer. You just get the kernel, a minimal GUI, xterm, nano, lynx, and a software installer. Then you can assemble your own set of programs.

My general impression was of a well-constructed distro that just worked, with a good user community. And not being from the US, you get the media codecs without the contortions needed with Suse or Fedora.

talalpro 08-07-2010 09:41 AM

yep but sometimes there is no support for the new kernel (virtualbox-mudules)

vrkalak 10-21-2010 12:43 AM

I used Sabayon, for a few months, a few years ago.

I just, today, downloaded both Sabayon SpinBase
and Sabayon 5.4 amd-64 (Gnome)

I normally like using the lighter desktops than Gnome, but that's why I D/L'd the SpinBase edition, too. I can always add Xfce to this, if I want to later.

I don't need a light-weight desktop, I just like the 'right-click' Menu of either Xfce or Openbox.

When I first began using GNU/Linux; I started with Fedora, then Sabayon. I have been using Debian for a couple years now.

I like several things about Gentoo. We'll see how Sabayon 5.4 grows on me.

hughetorrance 10-28-2010 09:44 AM

Well...there is no icon on LQ for Sabayon,so as you can see its easy to edit about:config in Firefox and get it to display Gentoo instead... ! makes me look more of a 1337 than I really am... LOL

Opensuse is very user friendly, you may try too.

Sorry, but I totally disagree with that statement. If you try Chakra or KahelOS you are exactly doing that, trying Chakra or KahelOS, not Arch. If you want to try Arch there is only one way to do it: Try Arch. Or would you recommend to anyone to try Ubuntu for having a look at Debian?

TigerLinux 01-02-2011 06:20 AM

Try Fedora or Opensuse, or MAndriva.

TigerLinux 01-02-2011 09:26 AM

So many ISO files, which one shall i download?
The Gaming version?
