Kernel Panic problems potential loss of data...
Hi,
I tried to do an update in my sabayon system and the next time I tried to login I received the following messages: RAMDISK: imcimplete Write error VFS could not find a valid V7 on ram0 Kernel Panic not syncing VFS unable to mount root on unknown block I can't even log in to recovery mode, I am very worried, I have potentially lost 2 years worth of a PhD... Sorry, I can't help with your kernel problem, but I would recommend to boot up from a live-CD and copy your data to an external medium.
If you have valuable data, you should always have at least one backup copy, better more at different physical locations, in case of a fire breaking out in your house. Not having backups is grossly negligent, in case of a harddisk failure or a controller running amok (not to mention the inevitable software failures) you will loose your work. |
That was the first thing I thought about, I am not new to this whole OS corrupting thing. However, I am now using an ubuntu live CD and I can't see any of my files, that is the real worry...
I will add that in previous crashes, data recovery in the way you suggested has never been a problem. |
Then make a copy of your whole drive using dd, then try to recover that files from the copy using photorec or similar software.

Let's see the output of this from the Ubuntu liveCD "sudo parted -l" |
How do I do that? I have a spare back up drive which certainly has the space to cope with it.

I should add that when I view my Sabayon system from Ubuntu, I can only see the following folders, boot, grub and last+found plus a load of kernel like files.
|
I wonder if Ubuntu loads LVM by default. Did you choose LVM, or does Sabayon default it ? - I looked at it (Sabayon) several years ago merely to compare it to the base gentoo, but don't recall it being a LVM system.
A Sabayon liveCD would be a better rescue system as it likely loads LVM (if that is the default) automagically. You can manage it from Ubuntu, but you'll have to mount the lv's manually. |
No too sure what LVM is (Linux virtual machine)? I am not too sure about defaulting to anything but what I did do is download a program which made it possible to view my linux partition from my windows partition and I could see the same files as I can from ubuntu.
I will try the Sabayon live cd to see if I can't get that working although previous versions didn't install on my current computer. |
You are looking at the wrong partition (/dev/sda1), this is the boot-partition. Your files will be on /dev/sda2 inside the LVM (Logical Volume Manager) container.
|
That seems to be the problem, THAT is all I can see.
|
Try it with the SystemRescueCD, there is also documentation about LVM and how to use it on their web-site.
|
Not too sure how applicable this is here. If I need something to be able to run the program on and I can't get linux looting and I also have limited visibility in windows 7, how can I use it. I went to the download site and it linked mt to something called wget. What is going on?
It is very very annoying with sites like these they're always impenetrable to those of use who don't already know how to use the software in question. |
SystemRescueCD is a live-CD, you can download it simply with clicking on the download link on the left side of the page and then choosing the Sourceforge-download. Burn it to a CD as you would with any other live-CD and then start from it and use the documentation to find and rescue your data.
If that is not applicable for you or too dificult for your knowledge-level I would recommend to bring your disk to a professional that can help you with rescuing your data. |
Thank you TobiSGD, for your very helpful suggestion.
I am aware, of what liveCDs are, how to burn them and also how to use them. However in this case there was no such link that you talk about. |
By googling the ISO instead of going to the link (which has no iso image) I finally managed to find one, burn it to a CD and boot it up. I am reading the instructions but it seems to be very long winded and doesn't tell me how to look at my data.

Anyways, I don't have used LVM myself, so I can't help with it. May it be possible that the SystemRescueCD is capable of just mounting the partition? |
I am searching for the other files in the system which should be there. I have to first find the partition that I wish to mount. I can't see them, that was the whole point.

I ran through with TestDisk 6.11.3, Data Recovery UtilityTestDisk 6.11.3 and it said the structure was bad...

Problems with logical volume:
Error starting job: Failed to execute child process "lvchange" (No such file or directory) That is what happened when I tried to activate the volume. |

I downloaded the latest 64bit version and was grabbing some packages. So many packages were being grabbed as dependancies, and there was not even a fbpanel package available. Then I upgraded the system and it left the entire system belly-up. This distro is just not finished is my conclusion.:tisk::banghead:
