Is Sabayon very nice to use?
It is KDE or Gnome?
Easy to install MP3 plugins?

EricTRA 01-01-2011 08:50 AM

Hello,

I only installed it once about 8 months ago and found it very attractive and easy to use. Sabayon comes in both flavors, Gnome and KDE, and possibly others. Have a look at the Sabayon webpage, that's always the best starting point. But then again, 'being nice to use', 'Gnome or KDE' and 'easy to install something' are just things that depend on your personal preferences and are different for all of us. I'd say, download it and run it from LiveCD to see if you like it.

Kind regards,

Eric

Hi,

As far as I remember yes, there is an option to install to harddisk. But to make sure check when started from the LiveCD.

Kind regards,

Eric

To play MP3, is it easier to install the MP3 plugins for Amarok?

DavidMcCann 01-08-2011 12:42 PM

If I remember rightly, the codecs are just there for media files. Being Italian, Sabayon doesn't have to worry about American patent law.

I found Sabayon very impressive: one of the dozen distros that just work. It has reasonably large user base (always good for getting help) without being so large that the forum becomes impersonal. The release schedule is very short - 3 months - but it seems to work, probably because the repository is not as big as Ubuntu, etc.

I plan to install it, i had the Xmas gaming version, 4GB Sabayon Gaming DVD.

Dear all,
recently installed Sabayon and found it to be great (apart from the spellcecker), caustion, there are 2 package managers: portage, entropy. Sulphur uses entropy and the CL is 'equo'.

I never tried it, have no additional HDD to test it. :D
Sabayon seems to be more popular than Mandriva nowadays.

Sabayon forum is very quiet.

Dear all,
the three month life cycle thing sounds a bit worrying, apart from that I might want to know about language support, no offence meant but I wonder if that is not the elephant standing in the corner?
As to the KDE vs. Gnome thing, I don't want to start an argument, but I might want to know which one Sab. was originally shipped with.

Fred.

.. The three month life cycle ..
Why do you think so ? Sabayon is Gentoo based .. and is a rolling release.

I think that both choices have been there for years.

Three months?? Where did you get that?

Sabayon is a rolling release distro....install it once and run the updates daily, weekly, monthly...whatever suits your needs and have a completely up to date working Gentoo eyecandy distro.

I've alwayd liked the Gnome version but the KDE one is popular. Hell, download the spinbase and make yer own....
