How to install Skype?: Sabayon 7
 

Firstly: I'm head over heels in love with this distribution; it's treating my little netbook like platinum!

I always had a soft spot in my heart for Gentoo, being the last distribution I'd dug my hands into before I let myself get roped into using Windows again. (Cue: Never never never never again; ugh!)

So, I settled for installing the KDE iso, and I simply adore the changes they've implemented with the environment! Very awesome. :)

Now then, I never had worked with Skype until about a year ago (when I was still running Windows 7). When I went to the site (see: http://www.skype.com/intl/en/get-sky...omputer/linux/), it offers downloads for ubuntu, debian, fedora, openSUSE, dynamic and static. Of the listed distributions, I recognize none as being based on Gentoo, as Sabayon is. Therefore, I am concerned about compatibilities with compiling.

Would really appreciate advice on how to proceed, thanks. :)

[Edit] And yes, I checked the wiki article, but it appears to be focused on a much older version of Sabayon & Skype, both, and the last addendum to the page is dated 4 years ago.[/Edit]

Course... I'm still questioning exactly what I did... but the program is running, and that's what's important, right?

Also, I keep pausing and thinking that that was entirely too easy to accomplish. >_<

Anyway: For fellow Sabayon 7 KDE users:

-download the dynamic file (skype-2.2.0.35.tar.bz2).

-Double click the file to open in ARK.

-Extract contents to preferred temporary location.

-The README will recommend the following:
-Open preferred Terminal & login as su.

-cd to /usr/share & mkdir /usr/share/skype.

-cd to directory where you extracted files/directories

-mv .../avatars, /icons, /sounds, /lang -t /usr/share/skype (that's not an actual code excerpt, move them separately, or use &&)

-mv the binary file -t /usr/bin (I also moved the .conf file here, but if there's a directory for .conf files, please let me know.)

-do... something with the License and README files >_>

-and I left the skype.desktop file alone... I don't think I've ever dealt with those in the past... I'll be researching that later - input always loved, of course.

-I think that's it for what I did... then I typed "skype" (sans quotes, of course) from the Terminal and it launched the program, pretty as you please.
