xmms came w/ rh9 won't play mp3!?!?!?

hi, tried play mp3 from my cd through xmms, there was a msg box pops up before anything happen when i press play.

don't remember word by word, but basically the message box was saying about licence problem with mp3, mpeg3, mpeg4, so won't let me play my mp3. i was like WTF!?!?!?!?

so i went to google, search for xmms download, try to install the rpm package, and it says the verson i have is newer then the one i can download.

i am a newbie come from mandrake, and the only problem i had with mandrake was mplayer and aviplayer because the install script was looking for /X11 which i don't have. i was hoping rh would works better because a lot software were tested base on redhat (even though mandrake and rh almost the same)

i don't feel wanna go back to mandrake, and i wanna learn all the tricks that's needed to get by on rh, so any help will be appreicated :)

:Pengy:

thank you

Red Hat does not include mp3 support anymore because of legal issues.

All you need to do is install xmms-mp3.

I have the same problem! But it's not only with mp3! I wasn't able to play a ogg find someone sent me and some wav files!! I click to load the files in xmms and nothing happens!!

The wav files are all in the same directory so I click to add all the files in that directory to the playlist and only some are loaded!

I can play all this files with windows media player or winamp. But no with xmms. Not error displayed.

I have Red Hat 9.0. I'll try that xmms-mp3 thing but...

ok, xmms-mp3 worked for mp3 and ogg files but not the wav files :(

if its normal wav file, click on start, sound and viedo, i think under that folder, there few program plays wav, i DON'T think M$ would licence *.wav :D

:) Yes! Koatun did play the wav files (but not the mp3).
Sound Recorder crashed! Segmentation Fault!

But it's weird anyway! Shouldn't it work for all wav files?

i believe it "should", because on my mandrake box, xmms works perfectly fine, but once i started with rh9, i've been having all these troubles. i'm trying to learn how to use it myself as well :study:

that xmms-mp3 worked 100% really good. i thought it was my soundcard playing up.. but it was the damn copyright thingy.. i didnt take notice earlier about the message, until i got it again and i noticed it.

Sweet thankx again!!!

Install the latest xmms, version 1.2.8. It has mp3 support and more, the version that comes with RH9 won't play mp3s, which sucks, but at least its not that hard to install a newer version of xmms.
