Wireless Setup

Hello everyone. I am a real newbie at linux, just been expirimeneting lately. I have a seemingly working setup of redhat shrike 9...something, i know its the most recent .

I have a d-link router with an xp and windows 98 computers connected with a cable, and I want to set up the laptop wirelessly. I know the laptop can connect because it works perfectly on other os's so i know its fine.

My problem is I don't really know the ip adrresses and whatnot about my router and computers, and in the wireless setup in redhat it had a bunch of feilds asking for things i had no idea about.

It would be great if someone could tell me all the numbers and info i need to know, hopefully where to find it out, and where to put it in the setup.

I imagine these types of questions are asked all the time, but i would greatly appreciate it if someone could help em with this.

Let me know if you need to know info about my setup.

Thanks in advance.

Is your router set up for DHCP to automatically assign IP's or static to assign your own? Use 192.168.0.0... or some numbers like that to get to your router setup, this should show all connected computers and there IP's. I believe RH9 has ndiswrapper installed by default? Open a terminal and type "ndiswrapper", if you see options it is already installed. This is for loading the wireless drivers ndiswrapper web site

I think you must have a manual book with the D-Link router.
If nothing, I know my D-Link router's original address is 192.168.0.1. If you never longin the router, you can type the IP address in any browser's address bar, like IE, Firefox, mozilla. When the router ask you user name and password you can type "admin" and the password blank. You will access your router.
btw, what's your router's model number?

Thanks for the reply,
I forgot aobut that ip in the adress bar thing so thanks. I'm sure i never changed its ip and i typed 192.168.0.1 in there and it worked, so i suppose thats the routers ip.

About model number do you mean DI-524 or whatnot? If so thats what it is.
I have to find that manual, and thanks again for replying.

Most routers are set to DHCP by default. Go type the router IP address into a browser window, and go through the options. You have the choices of DHCP or Static for assigning IP's. Change the default username / password for logging into the router, good security practice.

another easy way is push the restore button, it is beside the power in, there is a hole, you can use a pin to push it, then everything will become to default. Absolutely include DHCP service. Good Luck.

btw, when you restore the router, do not forget to setup the admin 's password, because the passward is blank by default. That's very important, because everybody can connect to your router and config it.

By router's default, the DHCP is started, and the Wireless's SSID is "default", if you can connect to the router use 192.168.0.1 , that means your pc already have a DHCP IP address form the router, you can make sure like this. click start, click run, type "cmd", then the DOS window will show up, type "ipconfig", you will see your IP address, I think it must be 192.168.0.100,maybe others, but means same, that's by default setup. so, when you saw that, the DHCP is already run on your router.
Good luck!

The above commands are for windoze. Linux is to open a terminal window type " ifconfig " and " iwconfig ". While in the terminal. For ndiswrapper type " lspci " get the set of numbers on the left, look for " Network controller ". This should give your type of driver, then type " lspci -n " get the numbers there for the wiki list of drivers. Then just follow install instructions with ndiswrapper.
