What can/can't run from the command line?

I have Red Hat Enterprise Linux v.3

Gnome is the desktop, or is it specifcally called the GUI?

Is it doable to run things likesay, mozilla, an mp3 music player, a photo-editor, media-player, email client, newsreaders, etc, soley from the command line? How would that work, I wouldn't get different little windows and be able to go back and forth between them no?

Yeah, thats basically it. It just seemed strange to me to not have the x-window active and be able to browse webpages and such.

You have to login to a gui environment such as gnome, kde, fluxbox, xfce etc if you want to run graphical programs e.g. Mozilla. If you are in console mode only then they won't run unless they have a textmode alternative e.g. emacs.

Yes, that was what I was getting at. I see I wasn't distinguishing between command line / console. I'll have to look into 'emacs' then, thanks to both!
