could you be a little more specific...

are you able to boot RH7.3 guest OS in VMWare and it boots to runlevel 3 (text/console) and you can login and work at the CLI but when you try 'startx' it does not load X ?

does it boot to runlevel 5 (graphical/X) ?

do you get any errors ?

what is most likely happening is that it is trying to use the "physical" display (monitor and video card) so you will need to install the vmware-tools so that it uses vmware monitor and video card

if you look at your /etc/X11/XF86Config does it have vmware for the monitor and video card driver ?

if you look at your /etc/X11/XF86Config, does it have
Code:
Section "Monitor"
        Identifier "Monitor0"
        VendorName "Monitor Vendor"
        ModelName "Unprobed Monitor"
        HorizSync 31.5 - 37.9
        VertRefresh 50.0 - 70.0
        Option "dpms"
EndSection

Section "Device"
        Identifier "Videocard0"
        Driver "vmware"
        VendorName "Videocard vendor"
        BoardName "VMWare"
EndSection
or something similar ?

for Section "Device", Driver should be "vmware", if it is not then it is likey trying to use your physical video card and that is what is causing the problem...

section "Device"
# no known options
Identifier "Videocard0"
Driver "VMware"
VendorName "Videcard vendor"
BoardName "VMWare"

#BusID
EndSection

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen0"
Device "Videocard0"
Monitor "Monitor0"
DefaultDepth 24

Subsection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "800x600"
EndSubsection

EndSection

Are you sure you've installed it before configuring the X Server?
If you choose to install vmware tools before you have configured XFree yet, the installation doesn't take care about X Server!! So, try to re-install your X-Server and then to install vmware tools.
