USB flash memory

if i plug my cameras compactflash card into the usb card reader
i can read the files or pictures no problem, but now i have aquired
one of those usb flash memory devices and i can't seem to be able to access anything on it,i know it works and it uses the same lead as my card reader but when i try to mount it nothing happens,if anybody has an answer i would be grateful,i bought it
for moving files between xp&redhat9 but no luck so far.
