Updating and installing

Hi,

Ive setup a linux box with Redhat 9, which I downloaded onto 3 cd's.
Ive installed minimal software, excluding X server, so its all just console based.

a) Does anyone know if there is a package to relist what stuff i installed from the original CD's and if i want to install more, etc. I know about the program RPM but how do i get a list of the available packages that are on the CD.

b) I remember that in X, there's an RH autoupdate program available, does anyone know if there's such a program that runs in console mode?

c) From experience, would one say that even when setting up a linux server, you should still at least install X server aswell? Or is it possible to do just about everything, all from the console?

any response gratefully appreciated.

Thanks

1) put disc in drive, "mount /mnt/cdrom" and then "ls /mnt/cdrom/Redhat/RPMS"

2) nope, but if you're brave enough not to use X, you shouldn't have a problem upgrading manually...

3) many things are possible, esp when you look at framebuffers.... http://directfb.org
