update without up2date

Hi

I have a 7.3 system. I went to redhat network and it gave me a list of packages for which there are updates. I can bring my system up-todate using red hat up2date.

The question is, can I just download all the update rpms and use rpm to do the update locally WITHOUT using up2date.

I would like to do this because starting in Jan, RHN support for 7.3 will go away but I will most likely need more 7.3 machines.

Thanks

You can download all of the updates locallay and then install the applicable ones using something like "rpm -Fvh *.rpm"

Take a look at freshrpms.net. You'll find information there on installing and configuring apt for getting updates. For RH7.3 you'll should get apt from valhalla.freshrpms.net. Once you install it you can use "apt-get update && apt-get upgrade" to update your system.

What sort of dependency errors? Can you list them? Did you get just plain updates from updates.redhat.com/7.3/en/os/ or are you trying to update some other packages from another source as well?

Yes, go to ==> http://rpmfind.net they have the updates for 7.3 as well as updates for other versions of RH and other distributions

RPMfind doesn't supports Red Hat 9. Is there a comparable alternative for Red Hat 9?

I have not done this yet. I am thinking that the update site will have the latest package but the distribution might be 2 or 3 or 4 releases behind. Let me explain with an example...

foo.1 RPM released with distribution
foo.2 (Dec 2002)
foo.3 (Mar 2003)
foo.4 (Nov 2003)

The update site has foo.4 and to install foo.4 you need foo.3 but I don't have 3.

Thanks
