Turning off the ext3 journal?

Has anyone ever successfully been able to turn off the journal function on an ext3 partition? I'm trying to run a huge database insert and the journal is causing it to pause every few seconds to update itself. Supposedly you can turn it off in the by passing the "noload" option in the fstab file.. but that doesn't work, it still starts up the journal. So, I figured I'd put the "noload" option in and run mkinitrd to make a new image file so it would see that before the fstab file. Well, that kinda worked... I got a kernel panic because there was no journal loaded on the ext3 filesystem. Well duh...

So, I'm trying to find a way to mount it as an ext3 filesystem with the journal turned off (for now, while this job runs), or even to mount it as an ext2 filesystem. I also tried changing the fstab file entry for the root partition from ext3 to ext2. This made it read only (it tried to load, but couldn't write to the disk) on bootup and I had to start over. This has been the case on all Red Hat systems.. 9, Fedora, and Enterprise Server 3.

So, if anyone has ever actually got this to work, I'd love to hear how you did it!

Thanks in advance.

Did you try passing in the rw flag specifically when you had it set to ext2?

No, I just changed the 'ext3' to 'ext2' in the fstab file, I wasn't aware there was a rw flag I could put in. Where exactly would it go? Is it one of the option flags you can specify in the fstab file as well?

Edit: I looked it up and saw that yeah, it's just an 'rw' option. So I tried leaving it as defaults,rw for the ext2 filesystem. Booting up gives me a warning (of course) about mounting an ext3 filesystem as ext2. That goes by ok... but I still get stuck. Here's what I'm seeing now:

Quote:
Checking root filesystem
/dev/sda2 is mounted. e2fsck: Cannot continue, aborting.
At this point, I get dropped to a shell and have to reboot. So, why is it bombing out on the root filesystem check still?
