Toshiba Satellite
(I posted this message in Linux - Laptops, but I thought it might also be appropriate in this forum.)
Hi. I just bought a Toshiba Satellite A25-S207, and I had a few questions. I want to run it as entirely a linux system. I was curious about how supportive Redhat 9 would be of this laptop. It has Wi-Fi, which I would like to utilize. I would like it to be supported by all features, I was also wondering if it would have programs to take the place of MS Word, Dreamweaver MX, Fireworks MX, and some personal scheduling software. If anyone could reply with information on how to get my laptop up and running with these features and Redhat 9 being the only OS on the system, I would much appreciate it. Thankyou. |
Please do not post the same thread in more than one forum. Picking the most relevant forum and posting it once there makes it easier for other members to help you and keeps the discussion all in one place.

Thank you :) I'll contact the Moderator of the Laptop forum and ask them to close that thread, as it seems more appropriate here. Cool |
Sorry about that, I won't do it next time.

No problem, I figured it was just a need to mention it so you'd know ;)
For the most part, your distro will come packed with all kinds of software. You can pick and choose what you want. Check out: www.freshmeat.net To find packages that meet your requirements (Search for things like HTML editor, not "Dreamweaver" ;) ) that are linux equivilents. What are the specs on the WiFi? Cool |
The Wi-Fi is an Agere Wi-Fi™ (802.11b) .

I found this as a possible replacement for Dreamweaver MX.
http://bluefish.openoffice.nl/ The only thing I really use Dreamweaver for is the feature it has to automatically upload a file to the server upon save. Has anyone had experience with Bluefish? Does it have this feature? I could not find it on the site. |
My Toshiba Portege came with a Lucent/Agere (firmware version 8.10) integrated 802.11b that doesn't work with the Orinoco drivers. I wish you the best, but believe you'll just end up doing what I did, which was buy a pcmcia wi-fi card. I got the Orinoco Gold and its working perfectly.
Also, check linux-on-laptops.net frequentley since someone may post their experience with the same hardware. Best, Adam |
If you're feeling ambitious, several people have had success using Dreamweaver MX under wine.
And if you're absolutely hard up on using MS Word instead of OpenOffice or StarOffice, Codeweaver's Crossover Office plugin can run MS Office |
The wireless LAN card is an Agere 802.11b integrated PCMCIA card. Once again I am running redhat 9. I would greatly appreciate any help w/ getting this to work. Thanks.
