The computer does not power down automatically


I am using Red Hat 9 with kernel 2.4.27. Everytime I shut down my machine, my machine shows the following messge:

...
...
Halting the system.
Power down.

After that I need to press the power button to switch it off, otherwise I can see those message on screen.

Please help.

you compiled this kernel?

did you put in amp / acpi

You probably do not have any power management running.

This is controled by something called APM and ACPI... correct me if I am wrong but APM is older and ACPI is newer.

If you have a newer motherboard you proabaly want to use ACPI. It can be built right into the kernel or used as a module. Post what distro and kernel version you are using to get some help activating one of these two.

Oops just saw you already posted your info. Did you compile this kernel yourseilf? If you did you will need to go back and turn on one or the other. Start ACPI if it gives wierd results use APM.

You can find them under "power management" in the kernel config.
