terminal with no prompt

I've just re-installed shrike with gnome.

When I start the gnome-terminal it has no command prompt. The cursor is flashing in the top left corner but I cannot type anything and my commands are not processed.

This only happens when I log in as a user. If I login as root the terminal works fine.

I've checked the permissions on /dev/tty* and they appear to be correct.

I've even made the user a member of the root group and the problem did not go away.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
