System hangs,if gives init 3 or init 4

Hi All,

I have redhat linux 9.0 with compiled kernel 2.6.7 (default was 2.4.20-8).
Currently it is running in runlevel 5. Output of "runlevel" command is "n 5".

System is hanging, when I try to run in level 3 (init 3) or level 4(init 4). Unable to get control, some number is printing continuously in the terminal.

Why my system is hanging?
Am I missing some thing?

I am completely strucked up and any info on this would be GREATLY APPRECIATED..

Output of my /etc/inittab:
#
# inittab This file describes how the INIT process should set up
# the system in a certain run-level.
#
# Author: Miquel van Smoorenburg, <miquels@drinkel.nl.mugnet.org>
# Modified for RHS Linux by Marc Ewing and Donnie Barnes
#

# Default runlevel. The runlevels used by RHS are:
# 0 - halt (Do NOT set initdefault to this)
# 1 - Single user mode
# 2 - Multiuser, without NFS (The same as 3, if you do not have networking)
# 3 - Full multiuser mode
# 4 - unused
# 5 - X11
# 6 - reboot (Do NOT set initdefault to this)

Hi there! can u please show us your error messages in your /var/log/messages or in your screen so that we understand what is happening to your system. Apparently, i don't see any problem in your /etc/inittab. Probably you will have to download the default configuration file if you feel it would repair current problem.
