System halts during the installation of RHEL v.4, cannot install,HELP PLS
Halo everybody,
I am a newbie to Linux and trying to install RHEL v.4 on my machine which has the following hardware configuration---
Asrock 865iGV motherboard
Intel pentium 4 processor
2.00GHz CPU
512mb DDR RAM
NVIDIA Geforce FX5200 graphics card
SAMSUNG SP0822N Hard Disk Drive 80gb
Network Adapter:Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast
Ethernet NIC
Smart Link 56k Voice Modem
I have tried several times last one wek to install Linux on my PC,and recieved a variety of errors.
The very first time when I boot from the installation CD the process stopped at a point looked like this--
interruptible_sleep_on_timeout+0*91/0*1da
Code: (a 3 line of mysterious numbers were shown)
<6>USB Universal Host Controller Interface driver V2.2
I thought may be there is something wrong with the USB ports and I retried the installation by disabling the USB ports from the BIOS.This time the process again got hang in between at a poin like---
/etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit:line167:1075
segmentation fault
modprobe $1>/dev/null 2>&1
network_
This time I disabled the ONBOARD LAN from the BIOS in a trial and error way thinking that there might be something wrong with the network adapters and then the installation process ran very smoothly, but after completion and rebooting when I tried to start Linux the system got stuck at a line ----
Checking for new hardwares....
frem there I can only change the terminals using <ALT><F2><F3><F4>,and <Alt><Ctrl><Del> to reboot the system and nothing else.
I cleaned my RAM,the jumpers of the Motherboard and tried again letting the ONBOARD LAN be ENABLED
and this time the system halted at a new point showing----
device_mapper:4.1.0-ioCH(2003-12-10)
initialised:dm@k.sistina.com
parport 0: PC_style at 0*378(0*778)
[PCSPP,TRISTATE,EPP]
parport 0: irq 7 detected_
I tried many a things I came to learn from this forum like trying to boot with a command that was supposed to fix irq errors:
boot: linux noapic acpi =off irqpoll
or some others like
boot: linux mem=nopentium
but nothing worked and I was shown the same problems.
I checked the CPU temperature and RAM speed from the BIOS and everything seems to be ok according to the informations I got from this site
CAN SOMEBODY HELP ME PLS figuring out what or where the problem is and if there is any way I can resolve it.
Thank u ,
Jack
P.S. The 'linux noprobe' command fixed the initial problem at first but again the system could not load linux after installation and I also didn't forget to make the 'swap' directory.
The NVIDIA graphics card was also probed during the installation.
I have no idea of how to upgrade the motherboard BIOS, can u pls tell me how I can do it. Is it possible to do it from the internet.Iam still trying to solve this problem and yet came up with nothing.I will be very grateful if u post a reply to me soon.
And thank u for ur kind attention.
Jack
check at your motherboard manufacturer site, they should have bios updates.
look for a bootable one (floppy), or depending on your motherboard, you could update from within the bios itself as well.
