Strange Sound Device Problem

Perhaps someone here can help me. I recently wiped slack 9.1 from a Compaq Evo desktop system that has an internal i810 soundcard. This card worked fine under slack, using alsa. Now I put RH9 on (don't get me started) and it uses OSS drivers for this card. Now I can hear sound just fine from the speaker, but when I plug in headphones no sound comes out of the headphones...it continues to come from the speaker. This box is on my desk at work and I cannot obviously play music like this because it will disturbs colleagues. Does anyone have a solution to this dilema (cannot wipe and reinstall slack, so something OTHER than that solution please).

Any help is greatly appreciated...

Nevermind...I installed the latest alsa from source. Works beautifully :)

G'day mate!
Where did you get the alsa drivers from?
I'm having trouble with my internel via soundchip... also, no sound from the PC speakers

Hello Kenji1903,

I obtained everything from http://www.alsa-project.org/ and just compiled. No problems at all.

Good Luck...

Cheers stingx!

I've tried compiling the ALSA drivers following a mini-how-to on this site... kind of ran into this problem at the final stage:
"alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such device"

I'm still trying to find out why, anyway, thanks for your reply :D
