Strange gnome question, panel/menu not loading

In root everything is fine. In user, the panel, menubar, taskbar have disappeared. What is there is the background and 3 icons like trash and home. How do I get this back? Is it a font problem, disk spack, memory problem? Any ideas?? I have Redhat 8.0 and the gnome that came with it.

Well, hehe, I found somewhere a suggestion to delete .gnome dir in the users dir and then log back in. That worked, I got the desktop with panel and menu icons back, but of course the user lost all personal preferences. What a pain. There's got to be a better way to bring back the menu's and panels that disappear.
