sound card detects but not working

i have Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 ES.
my PC is Hp Compaq dx6120 3GHz pentium 4 system.
Linux detects its sound card but not working.
plz help me!

Have you checked the volumes with 'alsaconf'

If your XMMS is showing that file is playing and no sound output then you have to check if your volume is not mute in console volume control... and it is configured properly... :)
