Our SysAd has purchased the Redhat Enterprise Linux Workstation 3.0 with kernel 2.4.21-4EL. But to get the SMP(symmetric Multiprocessing) support we need to have the kernel 2.4.21-4ELsmp. So how do I go about it? Is it possible to upgrade the kernel now? Or do we have to buy a another WS with the 2.4.21-4ELsmp kernel?
You should have the kernel (it's kernel-smp*.rpm file) on your installation cds. From the data I have it looks that it should be there. Even if it's not, you don't need to buy another version - you just need someone with Linux experience to compile it for you (or you can do it yourself asking for help on this forum - it's not a hard thing, but when you're doing it for the first time it may cause some problems).
Yes, there is a rpm available for the SMP kernel in the installation CD. How can I install that? Just "rpm -i" command will do or do I have to do some settings/configuration before that?
