gm is a script that lives in /etc/init.d. It accepts options like 'start' and 'stop' to start and stop the daemons that control the fiber optic boards. 'start' also loads the kernel module, if it's not already loaded. In other words, it behaves very much like other scripts in init.d.
The gm script can be viewed
here. The specific sections called with the 'start' and 'stop' options can be viewed
here and
here too
If I execute "/etc/init.d/gm start" or "/etc/init.d/gm stop" from the bash shell, everything works as it's supposed to: I see the "starting gm..." and "stopping gm...." messages, and the lights on the switch recording activity go out.
I placed a link (called S29gm) in rc[2345].d to /etc/init.d/gm, so that the fiber optics starts when the system boots. I can see the messages from the gm script starting the fiber optics when the system first boots.
I also placed a link (called K00gm) in rc[06].d to /etc/init.d/gm, so that the fiber optics is stopped when the system shuts down. Unfortunately, I can't see the messages associated with stopping the fiber optics when the system is shut down. Also, the lights on the switch remain on, indicating activity.
There are no error messages. I've also tried other K** numbers (05, 06, 29, 89, etc..)
any hints or clues?
