samba: windows file access permission
 

hey all

i have configured a Samba Domain and have shares in it, when any user from windows machine create any file any share and try to add or remove any users from security (under properties) it says "Unable to change Permission changes <Filename> Access Denied", can any1 tell me how to enable this plz. The users am trying to give permission are valid users and have account in linux machine and there entry is also there in smbpassword file.

I think you need to be more clear in what exactly you need to do?

It takes someone with administrator rights to change the file access/permissions.

here is what i want to achieve:

i have my samba share configured and users can access it, write in it, delete etc. Now multiple users create mutliple files Say User1 has created a file which should be access only by User3 and User2 should not access it , all the users( i.e User1 User2 User3) are allowed to access Samba Share. In order to achieve this I need to change the access permission on the file or directory by removing the users which we dont want to access n adding the users. Im just trying to achieve this. Hope am very clear now :)

The only way I have been able to achieve your desired result is by setting up groups. You can then set up the shares based on who you want to be able to access the share. It will take some coordination to set it up and will require the users to put the files in the correct share for access, but it will work. The same logic can be applied to the folders within the share if you set the groups up correctly. And also the files. But it will take some time to think through it all and plan it out but it is definitely able to be done.
