Samba wasn't running - checked log file today

While I was out on vacation, I received a call from an employee at my workplace. Our RedHat Linux 7 server running Samba 2.x was apparently down on Monday morning. The two employees that attempted to resolve the issue were unable to access the server because they didn't know root's password, so they restarted it and all was well.

I just got in today and took a look at the log files. They didn't seem to reveal too much.

The /var/log/messages log file indicates that syslogd was restarted around 6 times several hours before everyone came in Monday morning. What does this say, really? Was the server restarted that many times?

Unfortunately, I wasn't there when this happened, otherwise I could have tried pinging the server, checked IP configuration, etc. I'm guessing that there's a possibility that this may not have even been a Samba issue at all.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Did you verify the samba log files? /var/log/samba/*
