Samba error:server not using user level security

i am trying to setup a very basic samba share on RHEL.after editing smb.conf ,testparm output is ok,(though it shows STANDALONE SERVER.)the
directive i have used are

workgroup=MYGROUP
hosts allow=192.168.0. //my network
[storage]
path=/var/ftp
browseable=yes
valid users=user1

i have assigned passwd using smbpasswd.when i run
"smbclient //192.168.0.254/storage -U user1" from the same host machine

it asks for password and throws error

i am getting following error:
"server not using user level security and no password supplied.tree connect failed:Call returned zero byte (EOF)"

smb.conf has directive set as
security = user

i googled and tried many things but it still not working.plz advice.

the command:
smbclient -L localhost
runs successfully and returns all the configured share.

Thanks and regards
