Samba & Redhat questions

just a quick question:

in order to be able to share files between linux and windows machine
i need to setup a samba server rite?

And I was following a redhat book; to see the neighbourhood machines just type "samba:" in a natilus window.
But apparently, i can't get that to work.
So am i rite that i need to setup a samba server first?

thanks in advance

You need to modify /etc/samba/smb.conf so that it can be used to acclording to what you want, for more details, you should refer to data about samba from www.samba.org.

well, yes, any sane person would tell you that but i am anything but sane and i share files between a windows machine and linux machine via FTP.

Just my "not so logical" way of doing things. less hasle i think.

When I installed RH8.0 only part of the Samba was installed. I could not use the SWAT part it seem to be missing.
Is the SWAT part a seperate piece that needes to be installed seperately.
The reason I ask is in reading about it one place it said now load the SWAT part and yet in another place it says it is included in the rpm.

So what is it included or not included?

PS. I have other issues with SAMBA. Like the kernel asking for an older kernel then is installed. It is asking for a 2.2== and I have RH8.0 which is 2.4===

I have tryed 3 different downloads of SAMBA and all of them give me this problem.
