samba 3 on rh6.2?

I have few production servers running rh6.2 on 2.2 kernel.
Can we update from samba 2.0.10 to 3.x.x without kernel upgrade?
What are samba 3 requrements ? I couldn't find this information on samba.org.

Thanks

Kernel should be no problem, as samba does not depend on anything kernel specific.

But you might get into big trouble when it comes to dependecies. Probably lots of libraries of RH 6.2 will be outdated and not be available as a RH 6.2 rpm in the newer version required by Samba 3.
And even then it's not sure other services will fail when the new libraries are installed.
This is not what I would want to try on a production system.

If you don't find Samba 3 compiled especially for RH 6.2 somewhere on the web, it might be much easier to migrate the servers to a current Linux distro than force Samba 3 onto Red Hat 6.2.

Not to mention the security issues - RH 6.2 is out of support for over two years now. There are enough vulnerabilities to justify a migration even for a machine that is not directly connected to the Internet.

In short, my suggestion is:

If you urgently need Samba 3, migrate to a current distribution instead of trying to put Samba 3 there.

If not, stay with RH 6.2 and Samba 2.0 for now, but also consider migration in the near future.

Regards
ric.

Hey aurelio, you might want to check out CentOS. It is a rebuild of Red Hat Enterprise Linux, if you need something without support (which I'm assuming since you are running Red Hat 6). With CentOS 4 you should get 5 years of support for security updates, since that is when RHEL 4 is going to be supported 'till. I am using it as a desktop with Dag Wieers' repository added on (Dag's repository isn't really a good idea for server use). It also makes a great desktop Operating System.
