RHEL5 + Firefox w/plug-in = crashes!
 

I have been using the RHEL system for three years, and my current RHEL5 is really nice except for the browser. Firefox with its plug-in(s) is really poor with lots of crashes. I can't even right click and save an image! If they don't get this issue solved soon I'm off to another system. I use the browser at least 70% of the time, and crashing constantly just doesn't work for me. How do others live with this issue? BTW, I'm using the Java, Mplayer and Flashplayer plug-ins.

I can tell you if Java is not configured correctly then you will have issues with the browser just like you describe. I have provided a guide to getting Sun's Java correctly integrated into the Red Hat family;

I'm using the RPMforge repository for el5, so I assume the RPMs are current. The Java and Flashplayer plug-in(s) should be groomed by Redhat, IMHO, since these are public offerings from large companies.

I don't mind spending money either. Funny thing, for a stable browser on-line experience these days like an on-line purchase or eBay bidding war I have to start my VMware Player with Windows 2000 Professional and use IE6. Pretty sad, huh? Bottom line, I'm not going to put up with this issue much longer; the browser is a MAJOR application these days!

The packages from RPMforge are generally considered safe for the most part. However using the j2re packages from Dag's site with RHEL5 is not a good idea, use Sun's jre rpm package instead if not already.

You're right about the Java packages causing problems. I removed them, and things have been much better this evening. Before I install J6U3, I'm going to see just how many sites I visit really require it. Thanks!
